What is a Deconstructed Jacket?

A soft, deconstructed or unconstructed jacket is one that has no canvas, no fusing, little or no padding, no lining except in the shoulder and through the sleeve and no roping. Common features include exposed seams, working cuffs and patch pockets. An unconstructed jacket maintains a soft, loose shape and is most a favorite for spring and summer casual wear but also layers up well for fall and early winter. It can be a great travel piece and is essential for every man’s wardrobe.

The minimalist construction makes the unstructured jacket or sport coat versatile and comfortable. Choose it when you want to elevate your casual style without looking overdressed or too formal. Unconstructed blazers look great with jeans, chinos or even shorts and are most often found in light spring colors or neutral tones.

A structured suit jacket or blazer will hold its shape and requires greater care when wearing and hanging. But an unstructured jacket – typically made from cotton, linen, or lightweight blended fabrics – can be rolled and when made with the right fabrics works as a classic travel companion for an on-the-go casual option that can be packed and pulled out ready to wear with minimal wrinkles. It should fit close to the body but loose enough to allow for layering.
