Cleaning and pressing

The right amount of pressing and the proper process for cleaning an expensive suit can make all the difference between owning one for years and needing to buy a new one every year.

For a start, choose your cleaning service carefully: personal recommendation is always good, but look for a dry cleaner that specializes in men’s suits.

While a good dry cleaner for your expensive men’s suits is a necessity, it makes sense to shop around your locality for the right balance between quality of pressing and cleaning (which you will need to determine by word of mouth, reputation and reviews from existing customers) and the price they will be charging. Remember that the dry cleaning industry is quite competitive.

Check for certification when committing to a cleaning service for suits. A certified dry cleaner will have skilled professionals who have trained with the equipment and techniques they use.

It is a big the mistake to dry-clean men’s suits too often, however. The chemicals in the cleaning process can seriously damage natural fibres, weakening the fabric so that stress points such as the crotch and elbows will wear unevenly and more quickly.

Most modern suitings are impressively resistant to normal city dirt, and brushing with a soft-bristled brush at the end of the day will get rid of it. Unless an accident has resulted in a serious stain, men’s suits brushed down this way after use should only need to be dry-cleaned twice a year if they are normally worn once or twice a week. Dry-clean your suit before it is stored for while, too.
