Dressing the Accomplished Gentleman

Mature gentlemen are usually the most discerning of shoppers and yet the vast majority of fashion websites, blogs and magazines cater to a much younger and presumably hipper crowd. Dressing stylish and elegant, however, is a lifelong learning process and as a man ages, he needs to also update his wardrobe to reflect his changing lifestyle and circumstances. To that end, we’ve put together an easy wardrobe guide for the well dress, more accomplished gentleman. Age gracefully with Knot Standard’s bespoke men’s suits, choosing well tailored classic style over passing trends for a strong look that lasts.

  1. Five custom made, well fitted suits. We suggest a navy, a charcoal grey with waistcoat, a summer white or seersucker, a K Line Grey Herringbone and at the least one bold, double breasted pinstripe or glen plaid. These will get you through every occasion from the boardroom to the business conference presentation to the weekend garden party.
  2. Power ties. Go for deep reds, patterns or stripes like our, power red twill tie, 100% silk and handmade. We suggest avoiding paisleys or novelty ties. If you’ve acquired a closet full of unflattering or inappropriate neckties, give them to charity and start fresh with basic colors and textures.
  3. An expensive, well crafted watch. Think of it as an investment. You’ll wear it for years and then pass on to your son one day.
  4. Dress shirts. You can never have enough men’s dress shirts and our custom made Classic White Linen men’s dress shirt is a wardrobe staple. Stock up with three or four and then diversify your look with Classic Navy, Pink Herringbone, Purple Gingham, Weekday Black Poplin and of course, the Director’s Blue Twill.

Hats of choice. One of the great things about maturing is that you dictate your own style rather than following the trends of the moment. Hats have gone in and out of fashion but for the most stylish remain a lifelong option. Choose a hat based on the shape of your head, your personal style and your suit.
