Framing Your Face

collarsDo you know which collar fits your face?

There are many types of men’s dress shirt collars. Button down, spread, straight, narrow point, cutaway, band, club, eyelet, button tab and more. Collars frame your face and thus shape the picture you present to the world. So we’ve put together some quick tips for how to choose the perfect collar for your face.

Round faces – Men with round faces should wear narrow, point or tab collars as these will help elongate the face. Those with double chins should also wear narrow or tab collars. Round faces should avoid spread collars as this will only add to the impression of width.

Narrow/long/rectangular faces – The best option for this face shape is a spread collar, which creates the impression of greater width at the jawline. This works well for narrow or slimmer faces, creating a more proportioned and balanced look. Try our Light Blue Director’s Twill Shirt with cutaway collar, French cuffs and mother of pearl buttons.

Collars can also help those with head size or neck length concerns. If you have a larger head, choose longer collars. The cutaway collar is a great choice because it will balance out your head with your upper torso and chest. If your head is smaller, a medium spread collar works well for this.

Those with long necks can ask a bespoke advisor about adding height to a medium or wide spread collar in order to reduce the amount of visible neck. Similarly those with shorter necks should use narrow point collars as they will elongate the neck.
