KS Fit 101 – The Perfect Pair of Trousers

Measure Up!Waist to cuffs, getting the perfect pair of trousers.

Start with the waist. Trousers should fit you at the waist, not the hips. Saggy jeans may be fashionable but suit slacks should never hang down around your butt. Wrap the tape measure around your waist, keeping a finger between your skin and the tape measure for a comfortable fit.

Hips. A good tailor will measure your hips. A great tailor will measure your hips, front rise and back rise. Ask our bespoke advisors to help you get the perfect measurements.

Pants length. This measures the ‘outseam’ of your pants from your waist to the tops of your shoes. This will determine what is called the ‘break’ – essentially the point where your trousers stop. Too much break and your pants legs will bunch atop your shoes. Too little and we’ll all know when you forget to match your socks.

Inseam. Keep your shoes on. Now measure from the bottom of your crotch to the bottom of your ankle.

Thigh and Knee. Simply circle your thigh with the tape measure. Same for your knee.

Ankle. The width of your trouser leg bottom matters more than you would think. Too wide and you’ll look like you’re competing with John Travolta for a role in Saturday Night Fever. Too narrow and you’ll be compared with MC Hammer. Justin Beiber may think Hammer pants are cool. Trust us, they aren’t.
