How to Buy a Suit for Your Son

It may be his first suit but it won’t be his last. Help him gain the confidence he’ll need later in life by starting him down the path of custom tailored clothing now. There are many special occasions when you may need to buy a suit for your son: his grade school graduation, Bar Mitzvah, First Communion, a family member or friend’s wedding, spelling bee nationals, induction into the Honor Society or other special occasion. Whatever the reason, there are a few simple rules to keep in mind when buying a suit for your son.

First, get the fit right. Seriously boys will already dislike the idea of having to wear a suit. Don’t give them a reason to hate it with an ill fitting suit. Sleeves that are too long or the lack of a break in the trousers can completely ruin the look of the suit and the young man’s confidence in wearing it.

Knot Standard’s precise measurement technology works for young boys and teens as well and allows them greater confidence and privacy while going through the measuring process. If he’s into high tech, let him measure himself using our cutting edge technology and see how excited he is to wear the suit four weeks later.

Second, some parents may be tempted to buy a larger size in case your son grows or to get longer wear out of the suit. Don’t be tempted. See rule one. To get the most from the suit, make sure the fabric is quality and durable. We recommend a light wool in navy, grey or dark brown.

Third, like any men’s suit, suits for boys and young men should be complimented with the right dress shirt, tie, pocket square, dress shoes and watch.
