Straight Collars

A straight collar complements nearly any type of facial structure, so it is a good choice for people who prefer simple shirts without risk. Straight collars are a good general-purpose bet for most men; this type of collar is generally regarded as a safe, conservative pick and so is widely available in menswear stores.

Straight collars come in two distinctive styles of stitching. The traditional straight collar has a visible line of stitching about a quarter inch in from the edge of the collar. The European style of straight collar has stitching actually on the edge.

With this style of collar, the angle of the collar points is around 60 degrees or less. The collar points are therefore much closer to each other than with the spread collar style.

The major visual benefit of this type of collar is that the long and close-set points tend to draw the eye downwards, which in turn makes the face appear more elongated. Because of this they are ideally suited for men with a full face.
