Tie Patterns

When it comes to men’s tie patterns, you have a world of choices ranging from simple stripes to complex designs. Obviously the patterns you chose will say a lot about your tastes and preferences; perhaps more than any other accessory available to the wearer of a man’s suit, your tie will enable someone to make an immediate judgment about your mood or personality – and the pattern (or lack of one) will be a crucial part of that.

By incorporating a tie pattern in your wardrobe, you will be able to spruce up your ensemble for the day. It also adds to your professional look, depending on how you are pairing your shirt and tie. Choose a pattern that complements your outfit, particularly your dress shirt. If you are wearing a shirt with a strong pattern, pick a tie with a subtle or muted design; if your shirt is plain or subdued, your tie can be a bit stronger visually.

Repeat pattern: This is the most common style of tie, since the printing on the material can cover just about any kind of repeated design – paisley, geometrics, animals, logos, and more.

Dots: This subset of the repeat pattern is very popular and can make for great energy in the workplace. The smaller the dot on the tie, the more formal the tie is. Larger dots might work as a strong style statement, especially implying vivacity and fun, but they can come across as clown-like.

Stripes: Also known as regimental or club ties, they originally displayed the wearer’s attachment to a particular British clubs or army regiments. Today there is no such restriction. In Britain, the stripes run from high left to low right, while in America, the stripes run from right to left.

Woven: A woven tie is usually a solid color with no pattern; the texture of the weave itself is the only pattern. Woven men’s ties, especially in silk, are considered conservative and rather formal.

Checks: The classic check men’s tie can be a refreshing alternative to stripes, and muted checks are a popular pick for the conventional or conservative work zone. Stronger checks make a bold statement, though it can be toned down by wearing the checked tie with a shirt in checks or colour tones that match up with the tie’s check. If in doubt, always go for the subtle option. A tie can be the focal point of an outfit, but it should not distract too much from the person wearing it.
