We Disagree: No White Jeans in Winter

Esquire magazine’s fashion director Nick Sullivan recently opined that white jeans were perfectly acceptable, noting that he gleefully ignores the ‘no white after labor day’ fashion rule because “It annoys a certain kind of persnickety person who thinks rules like this help them to appear posh.

While we agree with Mr Sullivan that the no white after Labor rule is outdated, we can’t get on board with the white jeans in the dead of winter idea. We know white jeans are currently all the rage and enough blokes were kitted out with well fitted white jeans at the recent Pitti Uomo event in Florence in mid January. But there are some classic looks that we continue to admire and white jeans in January isn’t one of them.

We ask ourselves: would Cary Grant wear them to go skiing in the Alps? Would Steve McQueen be caught in a pair of white jeans while car racing? Emphatically no. And so we reject the idea of white jeans during the winter. There is a time and a season for most things. We would rather not have our jeans competing with the snow flurries as we head to work.

It you are over the dark and heavy colors of winter, consider wearing denim jeans with a casual blazer as an alternative. Knot Standard’s Brown Glen Plaid Blazer offers the practicality and warmth of a winter coat but in a lighter tan shade perfect for a warmer day at the park or golf course. Made from Italian mill Dino Filarte 90% Super 110s Wool & 10% Cashmere, it’s the perfect piece to brighten up a winter wardrobe and welcoming the spring.
