ks_overcoat_06 (2)Winter weather is fast approaching and with it the need for a stylish, comfortable and elegant winter coat. The array of choices – bomber, duffle, pea coat, parka, trench, overcoat – are dizzying and the colors and fabrics endless. Fear not.  Simply let your wardrobe dictate your choice of outer wear. Here are a four tips for choosing the right formal overcoat to get you through the long, cold winter months.

First, if you typically wear an elegant men’s suit to the office or elsewhere, the woolen overcoat is the right choice for you. Pea coats or bomber jackets work well with jeans or khakis but will look ridiculous worn over a finely tailored suit.

Second, fabric matters. Wool works best for several reasons. First it’s a warm fabric and when paired with a thick scarf will keep you warm on the coldest days. Second, wool is durable and naturally water resistant. It is also does not wrinkle easily and is dirt resistant and travels well.

Third, consider colors that go well no matter what you’re wearing underneath. That neon teal trench coat you’ve been eyeing may make a great fashion statement, but how well will it pair with an elegant and professional look like the Madison Navy Flannel Suit? Instead choose darker colors – navy or charcoal or black – that will add versatility to your wardrobe.

Finally, try The Winchester Coat. Made from durable Merino wool, the 4 button charcoal coat with notch lapels, two straight pockets and ticket pocket will add a dapper elegance to your winter wardrobe.
