Choosing the Right Socks

It is important to pay attention to selecting the right socks to wear with a man’s suits. Socks that do not match with the suit will present you as careless and perhaps unprofessional.

  • Start by avoiding cheap socks, particularly if you have invested in well-tailored men’s suit and quality dress shoes. The cheapness of socks in manmade fibre will be obvious at a glance.
  • Nor should you wear obviously old socks, where the color has been washed away or with obvious wear. It will simply present you in a negative light.
  • Don’t wear patterned socks if you are wearing a patterned suit.
  • For a dark suit, the socks should match with the color of the suit and not the color of the shoes. For example, if you are wearing a brown suit you should go for brown socks.
  • If you are wearing a suit of a light color, choose socks that are a couple of shades darker than the suit but lighter than the color of the shoes.
  • Never wear white socks with a suit of any color apart from white.
  • Never wear a sports sock with men’s suit unless you are dressing down for a seriously casual look – sports socks are made of heavy material and hence are unsuitable to be worn with dress shoes, though if you’re going for the suit-and-trainers look the sports sock is the only option.
