Fall Formal Wear FAQs

James-Bond-Daniel-Craig-007-580x386The holiday season may be months away but the fashion forward are already penciling in their event calendars and picking out suits to wear. Knot Standard’s Tuxedo FAQ gets you ready for the holiday party season.

Q: Which is better, renting or buying a tux?
A: Nothing looks worse than an ill fitting rented tux. Whether it’s for an office Christmas party, a night at the opera or your best mate’s wedding, a tuxedo’s fit should be your first priority.

Q: How do I choose a lapel?
A: Tuxedos work in notch, peak or shawl lapels so let your personal style dictate.  Notch lapels keep it conservative (and by that we mean you’ll either look like George Clooney or a waiter. You decide). Shawl collars, a reference to the style of the 1950s, are widely popular. But they work best with tall, muscular types so if you’re not, consider the peak lapel.

Q: Aren’t bowties for nerds?
A: James Bond wears a bowtie. Enough said.

Q: I hate the penguin suit style, can I go with a different color?
A: Midnight blue is acceptable for all but the most formal occasions. White dinner jackets also work well for anything but strictly black tie formal affairs.

Q: Do I really need suspenders?
A: At some point in the night your tuxedo jacket will come off. Suspenders serve the dual role of keeping your pants up and keeping you looking dapper even after a night of singing karoke with your boss.
