Flap Pockets

The flap pocket is a standard for the side pockets of a man’s suit jacket; effectively it is a lined flap of similar fabric to cover the upper portion of the pocket.

Originally this type of pocket was intended to protect the contents of a jetted pocket from rain. Today, flap pockets are more of a decorative feature on a man’s suit, streamlining the jacket by hiding the opening of the pocket.

Even more decorative is the diagonally-cut flap pocket known as a hacking pocket, a relatively uncommon style derived from English riding clothes and found mostly in bespoke suits.
