How to Get the Perfect Gentleman’s Shave

Gentlemen's-Shave-Infograph-1

Along with wearing custom made men’s suits, shoes without socks and vintage cars, straight razor shaves are part of a modern gentleman’s lifestyle. They take a bit more work than your average safety razor shave but also give a much cleaner, smoother look. If you’re new to the art of shaving or just want to make sure you’re doing it right, here are five quick tips to get the smoothest shave possible.

  • Warm your face with a hot towel. The hot towel or a hot shower just prior to the shave will open your pores, soften the bristle on your face and make it easier to shave. The hot towel also helps cleanse the face through the steam and relaxes you so that you can enjoy the ritual of the shave.
  • Use a quality badger shaving brush to lather the shaving soap or lotion onto the bristles. Work in a circular motion as this will help create a good lather and also lift up the bristles to be shaved.
  • Starting on the right side of the face, move the razor down in slow and steady strokes. Never work against the grain of the hair, especially on the face.
  • Work from side to side and then shave the upper lip and chin before moving onto the neck. You may need to stretch the skin as you move along the rim of the chin and neck.
  • Sterilize your razor with hot water after every use and wash your shaving brush thoroughly.

Perfection takes practice so don’t be afraid to take your time and learn to do it right. If you are having it done for the first time at a salon, go dressed for the occasion. We recommend the Benchmark Dark Blue Pinstripe Shirt, Classic Navy Blazer and Classic Grey Trousers.
