KS Fit 101 – What is Fit?

measure back2The single most important aspect of any suit is Fit. Fit doesn’t mean you’ve got a rock hard six pack (though that helps). Fit means the suit does what it should do well: It suits your body perfectly.

So here’s our top tips for understanding Fit:

Start with the shoulders. The seam should run along the edge of your shoulders, ending where your shoulders stop.

Collars. Shirt collars should never be too tight or too loose. If your collar moves when you turn your neck, its too tight. If you can fit more than two fingers in between, its too loose. Aim for 2cm shirt collar showing from your suit jacket collar.

The perfect jacket will complement your physique. Slim fits may be mod but if you aren’t slim, don’t go there. Classic or traditional cuts are better than seeing bulges above the belt. A suit jacket that’s too tight will crease when you move, creating a giant X (Need we say more?). Too much fabric and the suit will bunch and hang.

Keep armholes high but out of your armpits and the second or middle button on the front of the jacket should hit right above your belly button. The jacket sleeve should land where your thumb and wrist connect.

Suit jacket length is always CYA – it should cover your ass.

These are the keys to the perfect Fit, as every Knot Standard advisor knows. Talk to one and ask about these key points and others while discussing your own measurements.
