All About Layers

What are layers and why should you wear them? Knot Standard’s own Master Clothier Christopher Javier lays down the law about layers so that any guy can wear them with confidence.

What are layers?

Javier: A lot of guys get overwhelmed when discussing layers, so to clear the air on that: layering is nothing more than optimizing your clothing combinations for both function and appeal/aesthetic. So it’s a dual approach: one, does it have any purpose?, and two, does it add to my look?

Why and how should a guy use layers when dressing?

Javier: As we transition into spring, layers become even more important day-to-day for a sense of climate control. Many new fabrics offer technology to stay comfortable in the varying weather.

When dressing, if you were to take a black and white photo of your outfit each layer should be distinctive based on pattern, hue, or texture. This should not be optional.

What effect does layering create?

Javier: Layers let the world know that you have considered the details. All in all, it can elevate your outfit by adding character. That classic Navy suit becomes a whole lot more interesting, however still work appropriate, with a glen plaid double breasted waistcoat underneath.

Describe some current street style trends that incorporate layers. What are some ways layers are being seen on the catwalks of men’s fashion shows?

Javier: Jackets are heavy in many collections, with blazers taking a very interesting place on top of long and/or loose fitting tops. This has the effect of cutting the gentleman’s figure into distinctive color blocks while elongating it overall. Also very popular are crewneck sweaters over fully buttoned shirts for striking geometrics adorning the neckline and large statement color accents falling beneath.

What advice do you suggest for men who want to try incorporating more layers into their wardrobe? How can they wear layers with suits and look professional, sophisticated?

Javier: Start with the first two layers if you’re looking to spice things up- your upper and lower body. A nice way of doing this is breaking up your current suits and playing with the color spectrum, pairing from respective ends to get complimentary contrasts. From there, adopting a signature piece in a neutral color with a slight plaid pattern can be a great start towards stylish layering.

Can you suggest an outfit that includes layering and works for office or every day?

Javier: A three piece suit is always a great way to go as they give you a very smart appeal when done in all matching fabrics. By opting for a same fabric back instead of the traditional sateen, you’ll still look fully suited even after the blazer comes off. Take that same vest, throw it under a complementing blazer, and pair it with jeans for an update to your weekend look.
