Moths

The fabrics used in men’s suits have always been a favorite breeding ground for moths;
these insects can single-handedly ruin your suit and render it useless. You will need to
take precautions against moths, especially if you are storing them for some time.
Cedar oil is a natural poison that repels not only moths but other insects which can lay
eggs and hatch larvae on a man’s suit. You have two options: look for cedar coat
hangers, or commission a cedar wood closet. As an alternative, look for cedar-scented
moth deterrents in the supermarket or cedar sprays in your local hardware store.
But remember that even the best quality of cedar wood will lose its potency over the
years; fortunately it can be restored with a light sanding (remove the garments first!) or you could use a cedar spray.

A variety of poisons and deterrents are available both from hardware stores and
specialized men’s outfitters for clearing your closet of moths and other insects. But
artificial poisons in particular are very tenacious and could be harmful to the suit’s
wearer in the long run. You will be better off looking for natural-based poisons for this
purpose.
Moth repellent sachets and sprays are often available with eco-friendly packaging and
offer protection for your clothes for up to six months. Typically they are based on
essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, and lemongrass.
