Suits for Women

“The expression a woman wears on her face is far more important than the clothes she wears on her back,” said Dale Carnegie. That’s true, of course. But the clothes she wears will help to define her attitude and reflect her personality as well as the circumstances in which she is operating. So whatever the expression on her face, the presence of flip-flops and a torn tee shirt with hot pants will always affect the way she feels and the way people look at her.

The arguments for wearing a suit apply equally to women as to men:

1. A suit affects the way you look. The ensemble can work together to de-emphasize those parts of the body you want to play down, and to optimize those features that you regard as your best. Individual garments can do this too, but the parts of a suit are designed to work together to a common goal – making you look good.

2. A suit affects the way people look at you. People make instant judgements, and first impressions always count for a lot.

3. A suit affects the way you feel. In general, you look and feel better in a suit; you will subconsciously stand taller, walk more self-assuredly, feel more important, and even make decisions more easily. If something makes you feel better about yourself, why wouldn’t you take advantage?

4. Wearing a suit sets you apart. In a group of women who are dressed more casually, you will stand out.

5. Suits are essential for interviews (of all kinds). You’re probably familiar with the mantra: “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” A suit means business, professionalism and confidence. Dressing the part shows that you are serious about the job.
