Tweed

Tweed is a woolen fabric with a characteristic soft, open texture, often with a check or herringbone pattern. It usually has a subtle and interesting color effect resulting from the way differently colored strands are twisted into a two- or three-ply yarn.

Tweed originated from Scotland and Northern Ireland, where the weather can be demanding, and garment made of Tweed are typically durable, warm and moisture-resistant. Tweeds are commonly worn for outdoor country activities, typically as overcoats or jackets.

Tweed can also be used for men’s suits. The fabric will have a very distinctive feel, quite different from that of a wool suit – heavier and less fine. Because of that, Tweed tends to be reserved for jackets or for men’s suits that will be worn in the country.

Tweed does have a place in the stylish man’s wardrobe, however, because the colours and patterns available are so distinctive. Look out for herringbone and Prince of Wales check, the two best known and most frequently used styles of Tweed.
