Wearing your suit

The business of taking proper care of your suit is not limited to the times when it is stored in your wardrobe – you need to know the right way to wear a suit in order to ensure that your suit is being taken proper care of even when it is in use. Failing to do this can ruin it permanently.

Here are two key tips for wearing men’s suits during the day:

• What to with your jacket? It is quite natural that you will feel like taking off your suit jacket during the course of the day. Do not use a hook for hanging it – be sure to have a spare hanger available where possible, for instance in the office. Also remember to avoid the common practice of putting the jacket of a man’s suit on the back of a chair; this causes the fabric of the suit to strain and stretch in the wrong places, and this will affect the drape of the suit in the long term.

• Avoid heavy items in the outside jacket pocket. If you are in the habit of carrying heavy objects in the external jacket pocket of your suit, try to change – the added weight will strain the fabric of the suit and will inevitably hamper the crease and drape. Doing this regularly can ruin your precious suit in the long run. Get into the habit of using the inside pocket only, and only for carrying lightweight flattish objects. Everything else should be left at home, carried in your hand, or kept in a briefcase, portfolio or man bag.
